HACKNIGHT, a local Columbus group for designers and developer, is hosting an event on August 2nd from 6pm-9pm at QwirkColumbus. Mykola Bilokonsky will be presenting various topics about Arduino development.
The event will start with a quick introduction to Arduino (What is it? Why is it gaining so popularity so quickly? What can you do with it?), followed by a brief dive into Arduino code. Once we have the basics out of the way we’ll demonstrate how you can wire up an Arduino to a Node.js server. Depending on time we may further examine the various ways you can use Node to interact with the device, or merely use it as an intermediary to allow AIR applications built in Flex to interact with Arduino hardware.
Bilokonsky will be bringing a few Arduino units, but please feel free to bring your own as well if you have one. If you don’t have one but want one, head up to Microcenter.
If you want to follow along closely, you’ll need to download the Arduino IDE from http://www.arduino.cc/. The IDE should come with FTDI drivers that will allow the Arduino unit to work via USB as a Serial device – make sure you install these if you’re having trouble. Also, you may want to download and install Node.js –http://nodejs.org/ If you want to use this at hacknight it’ll be fun, but make sure you get it working before you show up. It can be tricky to make everything work and we won’t have time to troubleshoot Node installations.
Come join Hacknight (Tuesday, August 2nd from 6pm-9pm) at QwirkColumbus to gain insight on this fascinating technology!
